Caused by a failed attempt to repair a damaged die, the result is a buffalo with a stump and fully defined hoof — and no front leg.  The stuff of every kid’s dreams, enough of these errors escaped into circulation before the mint noticed its mistake that once upon a time it wasn’t entirely outside the realm of possibilities to find one in pocket change.

This particular example manged to survive in Mint State, showing off the famous phantom-limb in all its glory.
